Prep Time 10 minutes
Total Time 2 hours 10 minutes
Servings: 12 treats
Course: Dog Treats

Ingredients

  • 1 | medium | apple | Remove the seeds core, and stem before using
  • 1/2 | cup | carrot | I use fresh carrot peeled and chopped into small pieces
  • 1/2 | cup | plain unsweetened yogurt | Choose a yogurt with no added sugar or artificial sweeteners
  • 2 | tablespoons | water | Add only if needed to help blend the mixture

Equipment

  • 1 | Blender or food processor | For combining the apple, carrot, and yogurt1 | Silicone mold | Small paw, bone, or ice cube molds work well1 | Knife | For preparing the apple and carrot1 | Cutting board | For chopping the ingredients

Method

  1. Wash the apple and carrot thoroughly. Remove the apple core, seeds, and stem because apple seeds and the core should not be included in your dog's treat.
  2. Peel the carrot and chop it into small pieces. Cut the prepared apple into smaller chunks so everything blends easily.
  3. Add the apple, carrot, and plain yogurt to a blender or food processor.
  4. Blend until the mixture is mostly smooth. Add a small amount of water if the mixture is too thick to blend.
  5. Spoon or pour the mixture into silicone molds. Avoid filling the molds completely to the top.
  6. Place the molds flat in the freezer and freeze for at least 2 hours, or until the treats are completely firm.
  7. Remove one treat from the mold and allow it to sit for a minute or two before giving it to your dog. This makes it slightly easier to chew.
  8. Store the remaining treats in a sealed freezer safe container or bag.
Recipe Notes
  1. Storage: Keep the frozen treats in an airtight freezer container for up to 2 months for the best quality.
  2. Yogurt Tip: Use plain unsweetened yogurt and check the ingredient label for added sweeteners. Avoid products containing xylitol.
  3. Apple Safety: Always remove the seeds, stem, and core before preparing apples for dogs.
  4. Serving: These treats are best given as an occasional snack. Smaller dogs may need a smaller portion, especially if the treats are made in large molds.
  5. Common Mistake to Avoid: Do not use sweetened yogurt, apple pie filling, or flavored yogurt. These products can contain added sugar or ingredients that are not appropriate for dogs.
  6. Texture Tip: If your dog finds the frozen treats too hard, let one soften slightly at room temperature before serving.
