Banana Dog Treats

These homemade banana dog treats are simple, naturally sweet, and easy to make with ripe banana, oat flour, egg, and a little peanut butter. I bake them into small bite sized treats that are soft enough for everyday snacking and easy to break into smaller pieces for training rewards.

Course: Dog Treats

Ingredients

  • 1 | medium | ripe banana | I use a ripe banana for natural sweetness and moisture
  • 1 1/2 | cups | oat flour | Creates the dough and gives the treats structure
  • 1 | | egg | Helps bind the ingredients together
  • 2 | tablespoons | natural peanut butter | I use this for added flavor and to help bring the dough together
  • 1 | tablespoon | water | Add gradually if needed

Equipment

  • 1 | Mixing bowl | For combining the ingredients1 | Baking sheet | For baking the treats1 | Parchment paper | Helps prevent the treats from sticking1 | Fork | For mashing the banana1 | Small cookie cutter | For making bite sized treats1 | Rolling pin | For flattening the dough

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Peel the banana and place it in a mixing bowl. Mash it thoroughly with a fork until mostly smooth.
  3. Add the egg and natural peanut butter to the mashed banana and stir until evenly combined.
  4. Gradually add the oat flour and mix until a soft dough forms.
  5. Add the water a little at a time if the dough feels too dry.
  6. Place the dough between two sheets of parchment paper and roll it to approximately 1/4 inch thick.
  7. Cut the dough into small bite sized shapes using a cookie cutter.
  8. Arrange the treats on the prepared baking sheet with a little space between them.
  9. Bake for approximately 16 to 18 minutes, or until the treats are firm and lightly golden around the edges.
  10. Remove from the oven and allow the treats to cool completely before serving.
Recipe Notes
  1. Banana Tip: Use a ripe banana without any mold or spoiled areas. The natural sweetness of a ripe banana works well without adding sugar.
  2. Peanut Butter Safety: Use natural peanut butter that contains no xylitol or other artificial sweeteners. Check the ingredient label carefully before using it.
  3. Texture Tip: For softer treats, roll the dough slightly thicker and avoid overbaking. For firmer treats, roll the dough thinner and bake until completely set.
  4. Storage: Store cooled treats in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. You can freeze them in small portions for longer storage.
  5. Common Mistake to Avoid: Do not add sugar, honey, chocolate, or sweetened peanut butter. The banana provides enough natural sweetness.
  6. Serving: Break the treats into appropriately sized pieces and serve them as occasional rewards or training treats. Treats should complement, rather than replace, your dog's complete and balanced diet.
