Carrot and Apple Waffle for Dogs

These carrot and apple waffles for dogs are lightly sweet, simple, and easy to make with fresh carrot, apple, oat flour, and egg. I like this combination because the grated fruit and vegetable add natural flavor and moisture while the waffle iron turns the batter into fun bite sized treats.

Total Time 25 minutes
Servings: 12 small waffles
Course: Dog Treats

Ingredients

  • 1 | medium | apple | I use this for natural sweetness and moisture after removing the core and seeds
  • 1/2 | cup | finely grated carrot | I use this for natural flavor texture, and color
  • 1 | cup | oat flour | Creates the waffle batter and gives the waffles structure
  • 1 | | egg | Helps bind the ingredients together
  • 2 | tablespoons | water | Add gradually if needed to loosen the batter

Equipment

  • 1 | Waffle iron | For cooking the dog waffles1 | Mixing bowl | For combining the ingredients1 | Grater | For finely grating the carrot and apple1 | Measuring cups and spoons | For measuring the ingredients

Method

  1. Preheat the waffle iron according to the manufacturer's instructions.
  2. Wash and peel the apple. Remove the core, seeds, and stem completely.
  3. Finely grate the apple and carrot. If the grated apple releases a lot of liquid, gently drain the excess.
  4. Add the grated apple, carrot, oat flour, and egg to a mixing bowl.
  5. Stir the ingredients together until evenly combined.
  6. Add the water gradually and mix until a thick but spoonable batter forms.
  7. Lightly grease the waffle iron if needed according to the manufacturer's instructions.
  8. Spoon a small amount of batter into the waffle iron without overfilling it.
  9. Close the waffle iron and cook for approximately 3 to 5 minutes, or until the waffles are firm and lightly golden.
  10. Carefully remove the waffles and place them on a wire rack.
  11. Allow the waffles to cool completely before serving.
  12. Break the waffles into smaller pieces based on your dog's size.
Recipe Notes
  1. Apple Safety: Remove the apple core, seeds, and stem completely before grating. Do not blend or grate the seeds into the batter.
  2. Carrot Tip: Finely grate the carrot so it softens properly during cooking and distributes evenly throughout the waffles.
  3. Cooking Tip: Do not overfill the waffle iron because the batter can spread as it cooks and make the waffles difficult to remove.
  4. Texture Tip: For softer waffles, cook until just firm and lightly golden. For firmer treats, cook slightly longer and allow them to cool completely before serving.
  5. Storage: Store cooled waffles in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. You can freeze them in small portions for longer storage.
  6. Common Mistake to Avoid: Do not add sugar, honey, cinnamon, nutmeg, or sweetened applesauce. The natural flavor from the apple and carrot is enough.
  7. Serving: Break the waffles into appropriately sized pieces and serve them as occasional treats or training rewards. Treats should complement, rather than replace, your dog's complete and balanced diet.
