Method
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Add the pumpkin puree and egg to a mixing bowl. Stir until the mixture is smooth and well combined.
- Add the oat flour gradually and mix until a soft dough forms. If the dough feels too dry or crumbly, add the water a little at a time.
- Place the dough between two sheets of parchment paper and gently roll it out to about 1/4 inch thick.
- Use a small cookie cutter to cut the dough into bite sized treats. Gather any leftover dough, roll it again, and continue cutting.
- Place the treats on the prepared baking sheet, leaving a little space between each one.
- Bake for approximately 12 to 15 minutes, or until the treats are firm and lightly golden around the edges.
- Remove the baking sheet from the oven and let the treats cool completely before giving one to your cat.
- Store the cooled treats in an airtight container and refrigerate them until needed.
Recipe Notes
- Pumpkin Tip: Use plain 100% pumpkin puree. Do not use pumpkin pie filling because it can contain sugar, spices, and other ingredients that are not appropriate for cats.
- Storage: Keep the finished treats refrigerated in an airtight container for up to 5 days. You can also freeze them for longer storage.
- Serving: These should be offered as an occasional treat rather than replacing your cat's complete and balanced food.
- Portion Tip: Keep the treats small. A tiny homemade treat is usually enough for a cat, especially when you are introducing a new food.
- Common Mistake to Avoid: Avoid adding cinnamon, nutmeg, sugar, salt, honey, or other flavorings to the recipe. Cats do not need these ingredients in homemade treats.
- Texture Tip: If your cat prefers softer treats, avoid overbaking them. Let them cool completely before serving so you can check the final texture.
