Method
- Preheat the oven
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Make the dough
- Add the whole wheat flour, ground ginger, cinnamon, and turmeric to a mixing bowl. Stir to combine.
- Add the pumpkin puree, egg, and applesauce. Mix until a soft dough forms.
- Adjust the consistency
- If the dough feels too sticky to roll, add a little more flour. If it feels too dry or crumbly, add a small spoonful of applesauce.
- Roll out the dough
- Lightly flour your work surface and roll the dough to about 1/4 inch thick.
- Cut the treats
- Use a small gingerbread cookie cutter to cut out the treats. Transfer them to the prepared baking sheet, leaving a little space between each one.
- Bake
- Bake for approximately 12 to 15 minutes, depending on the size of your cookies. The edges should be lightly firm.
- Cool completely
- Remove the treats from the oven and allow them to cool completely on a wire rack before serving.
Recipe Notes
- Keep these treats plain and dog safe. Do not add nutmeg, chocolate, raisins, macadamia nuts, xylitol, or sugary frosting. Nutmeg and several common holiday ingredients can be unsafe for dogs.
- For smaller dogs, use a small cookie cutter and adjust the baking time so the treats do not become overly hard.
- Store completely cooled treats in an airtight container for up to 5 days at room temperature or refrigerate for up to 1 week. You can also freeze them for longer storage.
