Course: Cat Food

Ingredients

  • 1 | 5 oz can | tuna in water | Drain thoroughly and choose tuna without added seasonings
  • 1 | | egg | Helps bind the ingredients together
  • 3/4 | cup | oat flour | Provides structure and creates an easy to handle dough
  • 1 | tablespoon | plain pumpkin puree | I use plain pumpkin with no sugar salt, or spices
  • 1 | tablespoon | water | Add gradually if the dough is too dry

Equipment

  • 1 | Mixing bowl | For combining the ingredients1 | Fork | For breaking up the tuna and mixing the wet ingredients1 | Baking sheet | For baking the treats1 | Parchment paper | Helps prevent the treats from sticking1 | Rolling pin | For flattening the dough1 | Small cookie cutter | I use a small cutter to create bite sized treats

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Drain the tuna thoroughly and place it in a mixing bowl. Break it apart with a fork so there are no large pieces.
  3. Add the egg and pumpkin puree. Mix everything together until evenly combined.
  4. Add the oat flour gradually and stir until a soft dough forms. If the dough seems dry, add the water a little at a time.
  5. Place the dough between two sheets of parchment paper and roll it to approximately 1/4 inch thick.
  6. Use a small cookie cutter to cut the dough into bite sized treats. Gather the leftover dough, roll it out again, and continue cutting.
  7. Transfer the treats to the prepared baking sheet.
  8. Bake for approximately 10 to 12 minutes, until the treats are firm and lightly golden around the edges.
  9. Remove them from the oven and allow them to cool completely before serving.
  10. Once cooled, store the treats in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
Recipe Notes
  1. Storage: Refrigerate the finished treats in an airtight container for up to 5 days. You can freeze them in a freezer safe container for longer storage.
  2. Tuna Tip: Choose tuna packed in water and avoid tuna containing added salt, sauces, spices, garlic, or onion.
  3. Serving: These homemade treats should be given occasionally and should not replace your cat's complete and balanced regular food.
  4. Portion Tip: Keep portions small, particularly for smaller cats. These treats are intended as little rewards rather than a meal.
  5. Common Mistake to Avoid: Avoid adding milk, sugar, salt, seasoning, garlic, onion, or artificial sweeteners just to make the treats more flavorful.
  6. Safety Note: Introduce any new treat gradually and stop serving it if your cat develops digestive problems or another unusual reaction.
