Equipment

  • 1 | Mixing bowl | For combining the ingredients1 | Rolling pin | For rolling the dough evenly1 | Baking sheet | For baking the biscuits1 | Parchment paper | Helps prevent the biscuits from sticking1 | Small cookie cutter | For cutting the biscuits into bite sized shapes

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Add the egg, pumpkin puree, and unsweetened applesauce to a mixing bowl. Stir until smooth and well combined.
  3. Gradually add the whole wheat flour, mixing as you go, until a firm dough begins to form.
  4. Add the water one tablespoon at a time if the dough feels too dry. The finished dough should hold together without being sticky.
  5. Place the dough on a lightly floured surface or between two sheets of parchment paper. Roll it to approximately 1/4 inch thick.
  6. Cut the dough into small biscuit shapes using a cookie cutter.
  7. Gather the leftover dough, roll it out again, and continue cutting until all the dough has been used.
  8. Place the biscuits on the prepared baking sheet with a little space between each one.
  9. Bake for approximately 18 to 20 minutes, or until the biscuits are firm and lightly golden around the edges.
  10. Remove from the oven and allow the biscuits to cool completely on a cooling rack before serving.
Recipe Notes
  1. Texture Tip: For crunchier biscuits, roll the dough thinner and allow the biscuits to bake until completely firm. They will also become firmer as they cool.
  2. Pumpkin Tip: Use plain 100% pumpkin puree rather than pumpkin pie filling. Pumpkin pie filling can contain added sugar and spices.
  3. Storage: Store completely cooled biscuits in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 7 days. You can also freeze them for longer storage.
  4. Serving: These biscuits are intended as occasional treats and should not replace your dog's complete and balanced regular food.
  5. Common Mistake to Avoid: Do not add chocolate, raisins, grapes, macadamia nuts, xylitol, onion, garlic, or unnecessary seasoning to homemade dog biscuits.
  6. Portion Tip: Use a smaller cookie cutter for small dogs and break larger biscuits into smaller pieces when needed.
