Method
- Preheat the oven to 350°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Add the pumpkin puree, beaten egg, and xylitol free peanut butter to a large mixing bowl. Stir until evenly combined.
- Add the rolled oats and mix until a thick, workable dough forms.
- Place the dough between two pieces of parchment paper and roll it into an even layer about 1/4 inch thick.
- Remove the top piece of parchment and cut the dough into narrow snack sticks using a knife or pizza cutter.
- Transfer the pieces to the prepared baking sheet, leaving a little space between them.
- Bake for about 25 minutes, or until the treats are firm and lightly browned around the edges.
- Remove from the oven and allow the snack sticks to cool completely before serving.
Recipe Notes
- Use plain pumpkin puree rather than pumpkin pie filling, which can contain added sugar and spices.
- Always check the peanut butter label to make sure it is xylitol free. Do not use peanut butter containing chocolate, cocoa, or other ingredients that are unsafe for dogs.
- The final texture can vary depending on the moisture in the pumpkin. If the dough feels too wet, add a small amount of oats until it becomes easy to roll.
- These treats should be given as an occasional snack and should not replace your dog's complete and balanced regular diet.
- Store cooled treats in an airtight container in the refrigerator and freeze extras for longer storage.
