Method
- Preheat the oven to 350°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Add the whole wheat flour, egg, and pumpkin puree to a large mixing bowl.
- Stir the ingredients together while gradually adding the water until a firm dough forms.
- Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and gently knead until smooth enough to roll.
- Roll the dough to approximately 1/4 inch thick.
- Use a small round cookie cutter to cut an even number of cookies.
- Place the cookies on the prepared baking sheet and bake for about 20 minutes, or until firm and lightly golden.
- Remove the cookies from the oven and allow them to cool completely.
- Spread a thin layer of xylitol free peanut butter onto the flat side of half of the cookies.
- Place the remaining cookies on top and gently press them together to create the sandwich treats.
- Refrigerate the finished treats for about 15 to 20 minutes to help the peanut butter firm up before serving.
RECIPE NOTES
- Always use peanut butter that is completely xylitol free. Check the ingredient label carefully before using it.
- Use plain pumpkin puree rather than pumpkin pie filling.
- Keep the peanut butter layer thin so the treats are easier for your dog to eat.
- For small dogs, use a smaller cookie cutter and offer an appropriately sized portion.
- Store the finished treats in an airtight container in the refrigerator. They can also be frozen for longer storage.
- These treats are intended as an occasional snack and should not replace your dog's complete and balanced food.
