  • 1 | | egg | Helps bind the ingredients together
  • 2 | tablespoons | unsweetened applesauce | Adds moisture and extra apple flavor
  • 2 | tablespoons | water | Add gradually if the dough needs additional moisture

Equipment

  • 1 | Mixing bowl | For combining the dough ingredients1 | Grater | For finely grating the apple1 | Rolling pin | For rolling the dough evenly1 | Baking sheet | For baking the treats1 | Parchment paper | Helps prevent the treats from sticking1 | Small cookie cutter | For cutting the dough into bite sized shapes

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Wash the apple thoroughly. Remove the stem, core, and seeds, then finely grate the apple.
  3. Add the grated apple, egg, and unsweetened applesauce to a mixing bowl. Stir until evenly combined.
  4. Gradually add the whole wheat flour and mix until a firm dough forms.
  5. Add the water one tablespoon at a time if the dough feels too dry. Avoid adding too much because the apple already provides moisture.
  6. Place the dough between two sheets of parchment paper and roll it to approximately 1/4 inch thick.
  7. Use a small cookie cutter to cut the dough into your preferred shapes.
  8. Place the treats on the prepared baking sheet, leaving a little space between each one.
  9. Bake for approximately 16 to 18 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden and the treats feel firm.
  10. Remove the treats from the oven and allow them to cool completely on a cooling rack. They will become firmer as they cool.
Recipe Notes
  1. Apple Safety: Always remove the apple seeds, stem, and core before preparing apples for dogs. Only the flesh should be used in this recipe.
  2. Apple Pie Flavor: Traditional apple pie often contains sugar, butter, and spices such as nutmeg. This dog friendly version keeps things simple and leaves those ingredients out.
  3. Texture Tip: Roll the dough thinner for a crispier biscuit. Thicker treats will have a softer center.
  4. Storage: Store completely cooled treats in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 7 days. Freeze extras for longer storage.
  5. Common Mistake to Avoid: Do not use apple pie filling, cinnamon sugar, nutmeg, raisins, or sweetened applesauce. Plain fresh apple provides enough flavor.
  6. Serving: Give these as an occasional treat rather than replacing your dog's complete and balanced regular food. Break larger treats into smaller pieces for small dogs.
