Method
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease a 12 cup muffin tin or prepare silicone muffin cups.
- Place the ground turkey in a skillet over medium heat and cook thoroughly, breaking it into small pieces as it browns. Do not add salt, onion, garlic, or seasonings.
- Drain excess fat from the cooked turkey and allow it to cool slightly.
- Add the cooked turkey, egg, oat flour, and pumpkin puree to a mixing bowl.
- Stir until all the ingredients are evenly combined.
- Add the water gradually if the mixture feels too dry. It should hold together without becoming runny.
- Divide the mixture evenly between the prepared muffin cups, filling each one about two thirds full.
- Gently press the mixture into each cup so the muffins hold their shape while baking.
- Bake for approximately 20 to 25 minutes, or until the muffins are firm and the turkey is thoroughly cooked.
- Remove the muffin tin from the oven and allow the muffins to cool for several minutes.
- Transfer the muffins to a wire rack and allow them to cool completely before serving.
- Break the muffins into smaller pieces if needed to suit your dog's size.
Recipe Notes
- Meat Safety: Use lean ground turkey and cook it thoroughly. Avoid adding onion, garlic, salt, seasoning cubes, sauces, or spices.
- Portion Tip: Make the muffins small and consistent in size so they are easier to divide into suitable portions for your dog.
- Texture Tip: These muffins should be moist but firm enough to hold their shape. Allow them to cool completely before handling or serving.
- Storage: Store cooled muffins in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Freeze individual portions for longer storage and thaw them in the refrigerator before serving.
- Common Mistake to Avoid: Do not leave excess grease in the mixture or overfill the muffin cups. Too much fat can upset some dogs' stomachs, and oversized muffins may be difficult to portion.
- Serving: Offer small pieces as occasional treats or meal toppers. These muffins are not a complete and balanced meal, so they should not replace your dog's regular food. Adjust treat portions to your dog's size and daily calorie needs.
