Servings: 24 treats
Course: Dog food

Ingredients

  • 1 cup plain Greek yogurt Unsweetened and xylitol free.
  • 1/2 cup tapioca starch For thickening and helping the icing set.
  • 1 tablespoon pumpkin puree Plain and unsweetened optional for color and flavor.

Equipment

  • 1 Small mixing bowl For mixing the icing. 1 Whisk For creating a smooth icing consistency. 1 Piping bag For decorating treats and pupcakes. 1 Small spatula For spreading the icing.

Method

  1. Add the plain Greek yogurt to a small mixing bowl.
  2. Gradually add the tapioca starch while whisking continuously to prevent lumps.
  3. Add the pumpkin puree if using and mix until the icing is smooth and thick.
  4. Check the consistency. If the icing is too thin, add a little more tapioca starch. If it is too thick, add a small amount of yogurt.
  5. Transfer the icing to a piping bag or use a small spatula to spread it over completely cooled dog treats or pupcakes.
  6. Place the decorated treats on a flat surface and allow the icing to set for about 1 hour.
  7. For a firmer finish, refrigerate the decorated treats until the icing is fully set.
Recipe Notes
  1. Use plain, unsweetened Greek yogurt and check the ingredient label to make sure it contains no xylitol or other unsafe sweeteners.
  2. The icing will become firmer as it sets, but because it is homemade and contains yogurt, it is not intended to become as hard or shelf stable as commercial royal icing.
  3. Make sure baked treats and pupcakes are completely cool before decorating.
  4. Store decorated treats in an airtight container in the refrigerator and use them within a few days. You can also freeze decorated treats for longer storage.
  5. This icing is intended as an occasional treat and should be used in moderation.
