Ingredients

  • 1/2 | pound | beef liver | I use fresh liver and trim away any tough connective tissue
  • 1 | | egg | Helps bind the ingredients together
  • 1 1/2 | cups | oat flour | Creates a simple dough and gives the treats structure
  • 2 | tablespoons | plain pumpkin puree | Adds moisture and helps create a workable dough
  • 2 | tablespoons | water | Add gradually if needed

Equipment

  • 1 | Food processor or blender | For finely blending the liver1 | Mixing bowl | For combining the ingredients1 | Baking sheet | For baking the treats1 | Parchment paper | Helps prevent the treats from sticking1 | Small cookie cutter | For making bite sized treats1 | Rolling pin | For flattening the dough

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Rinse the liver under cool running water and pat it dry with paper towels. Trim away any tough connective tissue.
  3. Cut the liver into smaller pieces and place it in a food processor or blender. Blend until finely chopped and smooth.
  4. Transfer the blended liver to a mixing bowl. Add the egg and pumpkin puree and stir until evenly combined.
  5. Gradually add the oat flour and mix until a soft dough forms.
  6. Add the water a little at a time if the dough feels too dry. Avoid making the mixture unnecessarily wet.
  7. Place the dough between two sheets of parchment paper and roll it to approximately 1/4 inch thick.
  8. Cut the dough into small bite sized shapes using a cookie cutter.
  9. Arrange the treats on the prepared baking sheet with a little space between them.
  10. Bake for approximately 18 to 20 minutes, or until the treats are completely cooked and firm.
  11. Remove from the oven and allow the treats to cool completely before serving.
Recipe Notes
  1. Liver Safety: Liver is nutrient dense, so these treats should be given in moderation rather than making up a large part of your dog's diet.
  2. Cooking Tip: Make sure the liver is thoroughly cooked before giving the treats to your dog. Avoid serving raw or partially cooked liver in this recipe.
  3. Texture Tip: For a firmer treat, roll the dough thinner and bake until completely set. Let the treats cool fully before judging their final texture.
  4. Storage: Store cooled treats in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. You can freeze them in small portions for longer storage.
  5. Common Mistake to Avoid: Do not add salt, garlic, onion, pepper, seasoning cubes, or spice blends. The natural flavor of the liver is enough.
  6. Serving: Use small pieces as occasional rewards or training treats. Treats should complement, rather than replace, your dog's complete and balanced diet.
