There’s a real difference between a treat a dog eats in two bites and one that actually keeps them occupied for a while. Chew sticks fall firmly into the second category, and baking your own means you get to control exactly what’s in them, peanut butter flavor included, without paying for a bag of commercial…
Sweet potato has been a staple in dog treats for a long time, mostly on its own as a simple dehydrated chew. Adding blueberries changes the whole thing in a way that surprised me the first time I tried it. The natural sweetness of both ingredients plays off each other well, and blueberries bring a…
Cucumber doesn’t get nearly enough credit as a dog treat ingredient, mostly because it’s so plain on its own that it’s easy to overlook. Blended with yogurt and a bit of peanut butter and frozen into small bites, though, it turns into something genuinely refreshing, cool, low calorie, and hydrating in a way that a…
There’s a specific moment I keep coming back to. My cat sitting across the room, watching me from the arm of the couch, pupils shifting slightly as I move around the kitchen, then slowly closing and reopening her eyes when I finally sit down nearby. It took me a while to realize that moment was…
Most of the homemade treats I make don’t last long, either because my dog finishes them within a few days or because the recipe itself is soft and moist enough that it needs to live in the fridge or freezer. Biscuits are different. Baked low and slow until they’re genuinely dry all the way through,…
There is something surprisingly satisfying about making simple homemade treats for a cat, especially when I know exactly what went into the bowl. These chicken broth gel cubes are one of those little recipes that can make feeding time more interesting without requiring a complicated list of ingredients or a lot of preparation. I like…
There is a specific sound every dog owner learns to recognize, the click of nails on the kitchen floor the second a treat bag rustles. Most store bought treats are fine in moderation, but once you start reading the ingredient list on the back of the bag, it becomes clear how much filler ends up…
Ground turkey tends to get most of the attention in beginner dog food recipes, but cooking with a whole cut, like turkey breast or thigh, diced by hand, is just as approachable and teaches you a couple of genuinely useful skills along the way: how to safely debone a cooked cut, and how to judge…
Small dogs don’t just need less food than a larger dog, they often need food prepared differently altogether. A recipe that works perfectly for a sixty pound retriever can be genuinely impractical for a six pound Chihuahua, not because the ingredients are wrong, but because the piece size, calorie density, and portioning all need to…
The single habit that made homemade dog food actually sustainable for me wasn’t a specific recipe. It was learning to cook in a way that assumed the freezer, not the fridge, would be doing most of the work. A batch made on a Sunday afternoon can quietly cover two or three weeks of meals if…
